Diabetes – Tips for a summer of Healthy Cookouts
If you have type 2 diabetes it will mean that there are some restrictions on your diet. This does not mean though, that you still can’t enjoy socializing with food. Now that the summer is here you might be considering a cookout. There is no reason why you can’t enjoy your foods for diabetics in the great outdoors just like everyone else. It is important though, to stick to food that is not only healthy, but also that won’t put blood sugar levels at an unacceptably high level.
Nearly everyone knows about the dietary risks of summertime cookouts; the menu tends to be loaded with items that are high in fat, high in calories, and full of grease. # However, there are healthy diabetic meals alternatives that you can include in your next cookout to ensure that your menu stays tasty, but won’t ruin your dietary goals. Here are some healthy food choices to add to your next cookout:
Grill Veggies
Cut veggies, such as peppers and onions, to roughly the diameter of a silver dollar. Dust them with a light layer of extra virgin olive oil and season to taste.
Wrap the veggies tinfoil and throw the package on a grill. Cook the veggies alongside your hotdogs and hamburgers for about 20 minutes, or until the veggies are tender and hot.
Mayo-free Potato Salad
Not all potato salads require mayonnaise. In fact, without the mayo, potato salads can be quite healthy and incorporate not only a healthy dose of carbohydrates, but also onions, celery, oils, and dairy. Check online for mayo-free potato salad recipes that suit your taste buds.
Full-Fruit Popsicles or Ices
Instead of offering ice cream or another high fat, high sugar dessert, plan diabetic dessert ahead and make your own full-fruit popsicles or ices. Simply freeze any flavor of 100% fruit juice in an appropriately sized and shaped container, add small fruit chunks, and serve. You can find Popsicle trays in just about any grocery store. Always prefer to use sugar free candies and deserts in summer.
Limit the Alcohol
Most people enjoy having a summertime beverage, such as a margarita, daiquiri, or even a simple beer during a cookout. However, many fancy drinks are loaded with sugar that is not healthy for Diabetics. While a splurge may not hurt every now and then (as long as you monitor your blood sugar level), it is always a good idea to have low-sugar alternatives or sugar free desserts. One of the best low-sugar alcohol beverages is rum and diet coke.
The Right Melons
Watermelons are classic cookout favorites. However, watermelons are notorious for having loads of sugar and calories in them. In fact, one slice can pack as much as 80 calories. Instead of serving watermelon wedges at your next cookout, opt instead for honeydew or cantaloupe. You’ll still enjoy a flavorful slice, but you’ll only get about half the calories and sugar.

You may be surprised to learn that you actually have the potential to reduce the harmful effects of diabetes, purely by making some changes to your lifestyle.
Every person who has diabetes has difficult problems, which comes from the various degrees of complications that they may be dealing with. Because of the differences, some are able to eat a few more carbs than others. However, the types of foods that you should be avoiding, and those diabetic meals that you should be eating, is going to be the same for every person who is dealing with diabetes.
We focus on the role of diabetic diet and exercise in the management of Type 2 diabetes. In particular, we will take a look at the way in which diet and exercise can improve:
* Blood glucose levels
* Blood fats
* Blood pressure
Blood glucose levels: Blood glucose levels are mainly kept in check by insulin syringes and needles. Type 2 diabetes usually occurs as the result of a combination of problems with insulin activity (insulin resistance) and insulin secretion. Diet and exercise can help to combat both of these problems.
Blood fats: Many people with Type 2 diabetes have unhealthy levels of blood fats? This is commonly referred to as an unhealthy? Lipid profile? Too much of the wrong types of fat in the blood increase the risk of heart disease and circulation problems. Blood fats are mainly kept in check by body fat analyzer. Blood pressure: Type 2 diabetes is often accompanied by high blood pressure and this increases the risk of diabetic eye and kidney damage, as well as heart disease and circulation problems. Healthy and Fulfilling Life despite Diabetes
Healthy and Fulfilling Life despite Diabetes
I’m Deborah Susan, a dietician and personal trainer specializing in nutrition, physical fitness and diabetes diet plan for diabetics. Over the years I’ve noticed a trend in the questions that diabetics and their family members have been asking. Also, many of my clients had often suggested I not let my knowledge and experience go waste; instead, I should write a book that would help society cope and live a healthy life despite diabetes. A friend recently suggested I start with an article and if I like the response I could write a book.
Although many have said I have a way with words, I must state that I am not a writer or author and have until today, never written so much as an article let alone a book. I’ve decided to take the plunge primarily because I have seen intense and unnecessary suffering caused by wrong information, phobia, misguidance and myths. Lack of proper guidance and knowledge ultimately proves expensive in more ways than can be imagined.
In writing these article, it is my ardent desire to provide useful, practical knowledge (including a few low fat low carb recipes for diabetic) to help people living with diabetes to make decisions that enable them to live successfully with diabetes.
To begin with, although 99% of you probably already know what diabetes is, I’d like to define it precisely so that at the end of this first article, we are all on the same page and do not have differing ideas on what diabetes is.
What is diabetes?
Diabetes is a condition in which your body cannot control the level of glucose (sugar) in your blood because (a) your pancreas (not kidneys) does not produce enough insulin or (b) your body cells are resistant to the action of insulin, that’s why we take insulin diabetic syringes.
When your blood glucose level rises, the glucose cannot get into the cells which means despite all the sugar, your body is deprived of energy. Lack of energy triggers the break down and conversion of fat and muscles into alternate source of energy. Always prefer to use diabetic glucose meter for checking your glucose level regularly
What goes wrong in diabetes?
Since the Glucose in your blood does not get utilized, it gets flushed out through urine. Meanwhile the body breaks down fat and muscle as an alternate energy source causing rapid (and dangerous) weight loss. Rapid break down of fat causes build up of toxic chemicals in your blood. If left unattended, all organs in the body begin to deteriorate and fail, ultimately leading to death – and a painful one at that.
Type 1 Diabetes
Myth: Diabetes begins with Type 1 and then progress to Type 2
Truth: Wrong! Type 1 and Type 2 are two totally different types of diabetes
People diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes do not produce any insulin. They need to be treated with insulin given by insulin syringes & injection or via diabetes Insulin Pump. (Insulin via a tablet would not be effective as it would be destroyed in the digestion process).
Type 2 Diabetes
This is the more common form of diabetes. Obesity is the primary reason for Type 2 diabetes. People diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes do not produce sufficient quantities of insulin. Initially your pancreas respond to the demand (created by obesity), by producing more insulin. However, it cannot do so indefinitely. Corrective action includes reducing body fat by checking through Body Fat Scales and leading a healthier lifestyle. If corrective action is taken soon enough, then people suffering from Type 2 diabetes need not take any medication such as glucose tablets or glucose supplements and can lead a healthy normal life. Failure to take corrective action will create a need for insulin injections to supplement the inadequate quantum of insulin produced by your pancreas.
Myth: Type 1 diabetes is serious
Truth: Yes and No. However Type 2 likely to be more harmful because people often have it for years before being diagnosed. Having it for years can lead to long term complications.
Now that we know what diabetes is, in my next article I shall attempt to answer the second most frequently asked question: Why does diabetes develop?
I hope my effort in writing these articles helps you lead a more knowledgeable and healthier life.
